Is she up yet?

New wave music is a musical genre of pop/rock that started in the late 70s to mid-80s. The new wave sound moved away from the smooth blues and rock & roll sounds to create music with a twitchy, agitated feel, choppy rhythm guitars and fast tempos. It also heated up the music scene in former Yugoslavia.

One of the first bands of the new wave in Belgrade was Šarlo Akrobata. They were active only for a year and released only one album but they made a huge impact on our music scene and its members later set up great bands. The bassist Koja started Disciplina Kičme, and Milan (lead vocals and guitar) along with Vd (drums) founded the legendary EKV.

The song released as the B-side on their single, and also one of the best songs of that era was “Ona se budi” (She’s Waking up). It has a heavenly bass line, killer drums and great lyrics. The song gives out a positive message. I won’t go into detail about its meaning except that it is probably the first song in the whole region talking about the significant role of women in society, other than the usual one as kitchen slaves.
