“It can take a lot of strength to show up and be yourself…don’t you think?”
The Beaumont family is keeping a secret for generations now. Each of the family members has a magic power, called a „savvy“, that they gain on their 13th birthday. Magic power is different for every person, and can be dangerous if it gets out of control and isn’t hidden from the ordinary world. For example, Grandpa Bomba has the power to make earthquakes, his daughter has a power to do everything perfect, and her sons can control hurricanes and electricity. Now it’s their sisters turn, Mississipi, to get hers. But the day before she turns 13, her father falls into a coma after a traffic accident. Determined to visit her father in hospital, Mississipi runs away from her birthday party and starts an unforgettable adventure that will make her grow up overnight and realize that other people have secrets too, even if they don’t have any magic powers.
I liked the book, even if it can be a little childish sometimes. It would probably be more interesting and relatable if you were 13 or younger, but the storyline is interesting, and really easy to read and it carries a nice and positive message in a little less than 200 pages. Overall, I would describe it as a great relaxing book, but nothing more than that.
